Hungarian pre-ban fixed stock, with full assembly of all-Russian accessories. Rifle features late Russian laminated wood furniture, barrel assembly, and bakelite magazines. Rifle sling, canvas drop bag and AKM 3-cell magazine pouch are all surplus Russian army issue items. Bakelite 30-round magazines are all Izhevsk manufacture.
Two project rifles, one built on a Maadi receiver, the other on Hungarian, in various stages of construction. AK-74 features Bulgarian barrel assembly, Russian internals, leaf sight, receiver cover and muzzle brake, and Russian maroon furniture set. The preban Maadi AKM has a Bulgarian furniture set, Russian internals, leaf sight, late cast gas block and front sight base installed. All Maadi original parts have been discarded save for the barrelled receiver. Most Egyptian stampings fall short of Russian quality standards.
Hungarian AKM dressed in Russian AKM late style furniture, angular late transitional gas block, Russian front sight, selector, cover, gas tube, lower retainer, rear sight leaf, and bolt carrier. With Izhevsk bakelite magazine.
Here is an image of a very nice semi-auto replica of an early Russian AK-74 with solid buttstock laminated wood furniture. This one was built by a contributor from the AK Site BBS. The rifle displays original Russian furniture, Izhevsk bakelite magazine, and sling. Both types of Russian bayonets used with AK-74 family are shown, which are the earlier bakelite square handle Bowie and the latest spear point model with black polyamide grip and sheath.
Russian AKM lookalike, displaying some very nice original furniture and parts. This rifle is fitted with rare late style dark handguards, matching buttstock, and Russian sling and bayonet. Red bakelite magazine and pistol grip complete the package, which has produced a very handsome rifle.
Excellent build of an AK-74M, photo courtesy "Beryl" and built by Mike Pruitt, both regular AK Site contributors. Even with its' excellent good looks, this rifle, built on a Romak 2 receiver, is totally legal and features a non-folding Russian "folder" buttstock, US parts kit, and original AK-74 style barrel assembly (as opposed to Romanian style). Sight mounted is the EKP-1S.
Another view of the rifle above, showing the right hand side. Notice the profile of the Russian plastic folding stock, the attachment for the sling, and the correct barrel assembly for this style of rifle.
An early attempt I made to emulate the AK-74 look, using a Hungarian rifle in 7.62mm. This was before any AK-74 parts were available from mainstreat suppliers. I was lucky to find the original furniture, magazines and some barrel and receiver parts, but much of the mechanics were still AKM. However, the overall look was quite striking, and I received a lot of compliments from fellow collectors.
Romanian PSL sniper and mock-up Romanian AK-74 rifle. PSL sports standard Romanian laminated buttstock and solid wood handguards. Receiver is lengthened on both the rear and the front, has the RPK type barrel trunnion, Rom designed 10-round 7,62x54R magazines. I eventually swapped out the stock because I wanted one that was closer in color to the handgurads, one from KVar fit the bill perfectly. The particular scope mounted is the Novosibirsk PO 6x36, made in Russia. If you need one, E-mail me.

Romanian style AK-74 has Maadi receiver, Rom parts kit, smooth style lower, bakelite upper and pistol grip, and standard Romanian side folder. Magazines are original Romanian 30-round metal 5,45x39mm. Notice the earlier golden colored sling, made from a more flexible nylon webbing.
